Smart cars
The
idea for the smart car first came around originally as a car that simply
made driving easier and more enjoyable. In 1993, Mercedes-Benz did a
feasibility study that addressed the possible manufacturing of these
kinds of cars.
These cars are very small and are sometimes referred to as “super-minis.”
the reason why they are called minis is obvious as they are being looked
at. Basically, these cars eliminate the need to parallel park because
they are so much shorter than other cars.
This means that those who drive a smart car can pull straight “nose-in”
to a parallel parking spot and still have room to spare. This is definitely
something that those who hate to parallel park look forward to using.
In 2005, Daimler Chrysler had an opportunity to buy into ownership
of the smart car rights, but decided not to do so. One year later, in
2006, Mercedes-Benz decided that it would be in their best interest
to not pass on such an opportunity.
Because the smart car reported huge losses from 2003 to 2006, there
are current changes afoot concerning how the cars will operate and be
marketed.
