Smart cars, Prices, and Accessories

Smart cars are revolutionizing the way Americans view transportation. Americans are quickly learning that large SUV’s and gas guzzling trucks are just not necessary for most city dwellers. The smart car is a logical choice for those who live in crowded cities and just need a simple means of commuting.

Smartcarusa.org is a site designed to provide information about smart cars and their features. We are not affiliated in any way with Mercedes-Benz, the makers of the smart car. The goal of this site is to educate Americans about the benefits of the smart car and provide information on parts and accessories for the vehicle.

The smart car was developed by the makers of the watches Swatch. The name of the car is actually derived from the combination of the words Swatch, Mercedes, and art. Swatch opted out of the venture a couple of years ago and now Daimler and Mercedes joined forces making Daimler the manufacturer of today’s smart car.

The smart car is not only an eco-friendly car, but it is also designed to be cost effective as well. The car has been popular for years in Europe due to its compact design. Europe has proven the car to be a viable option for crowded, polluted cities and soon Americans will catch on as well.

The smart car came to the US in January of 2008. The car is very small- measuring just over eight feet in length, leading some to call them super minis.  Because of their small frames, the cars are a breeze to park and can even pull nose first into most parallel parking spaces. In fact three smart cars can fit into one parking space!

Many people fear the small size of the car will lead to a reduction of safety. Surprisingly though the car received top crash test ratings from the Institute of Highway Safety.  It is fair to say however that the smart car would not come out unscathed if it were involved in an accident with an SUV or other large vehicle.

The smart car isn’t a speedy performance car either. Its modest engine is one liter and has three cylinders. The car can hold its own on the freeway however with a top speed of ninety miles per hour.

The smart car is smart because it’s better for the planet than most cars. Beginning with the manufacturing- the car is made in environmentally friendly plants. It’s powder coated as opposed to painted, it’s fuel efficient getting- forty-one miles per gallon on the freeway, and with the pending release of the diesel model the fuel efficiency will increase and consumers will have the option of using biodiesel fuel. The car is also fully recyclable.

The cost is another big bonus for American interested in the smart car. As opposed to spending upwards of twenty-five grand on a normal car the smart car can be purchased starting at twelve thousand, with well equipped models costing just seventeen thousand. Smart cars offer an economical alternative to cars that not only cost more, but consume more fuel as well.

The smart car is available in the US with three different models. The ForTwo Pure Coupe is the base model. The Passion Coupe is the next step up and comes well equipped.  For more fun the Passion Cabriolet is available fully equipped with a convertible roof.

Americans interested in the smart car will have to act fast. The car currently has a two year waiting list, as the first twenty-five thousand produced in 2008 have since sold out. The car can be ordered in one of six colors. Unfortunately very few used models are on the market- which is actually a good thing; this means consumers like the car and are holding onto them.

Parts may be slightly difficult to find for the vehicle since it’s relatively new to the US market. There are a number of fun accessories sold online however, so that the car owner can customize his vehicle. Searching for smart car accessories online will also help connect fellow owners in this growing community.
